Each example offers a perspective on the public thinking about the
United States’ involvement in World War I, with changing ideas triggered
by current events.

The underlying message: Don't overlook the newspaper as an aspect of
your collection.

1. Romeyn Hough. American Woods. Romeyn Hough's Monumental Work, The American Woods

Hough, Romeyn (1857-1924). The American Woods,
Exhibited by Actual Specimens and with Copious Explanatory Text.
Lowville, N.Y.: Published and Sections Prepared by the Author,
1894-1928. 14 volumes. Octavo, green cloth, viii, 79; viii, 45; viii,
47; viii, 46 ; viii, 54; viii, 58; viii, 60; viii, 66; viii, 56; viii,
61; viii, 54; viii, 64, [4]; vi, 49; vi, 38 pp. The 14 volumes were
issued with 350 unbound plates of mounted sections of wood (totaling
1,050 samples); an accompanying text for each volume is in original
printed wrappers; each volume of plates and text is housed in original
green blind-stamped chemise and slip case with clasp. Of the 350
specimens, this set is lacking just 28 (Nos. 252, 258, 263, 265, 266,
267, 268, 269, 272, 274, 275, 277, 278, 281, 291, 298, 322, 226, 327,
329, 331, 332, 333, 336, 339, 343, 346, and 350). The missing plates
are from Volumes XI-XIV, and have been supplied in color facsimile.
Each specimen is about 2 x 5 inches in size, and sufficiently thin to
admit examination in transmitted light. These specimens are mounted in
durable frame-like Bristol-board pages, with each bearing in gold-bronze
the technical name of the species in English, German, French, and
Spanish. The pages themselves are separable and are accompanied by a
text giving information as to the uses and physical properties of
the woods, as well as distributions, habits of growth, botanical
characteristics, habitants, medicinal properties, etc. The samples show
the usual occasional splitting; and the majority of the bindings show
some mottling. $12,000.00

This unusual work was the lifetime achievement of medical doctor and
botanist, Romeyn B. Hough, who devoted himself to the study
of American trees. In his Introduction, Hough explains that this work
is designed “primarily and principally to show, in as compact and
perfect manner as possible, authentic specimens of our American woods,
both native and introduced. For that end three sections, respectively
traverse, radial and tangential to the grain, are made of each timber,
sufficiently thin to allow in a measure the transmission of light and
securely mounted in well made frames.” Each of the specimens was
personally selected by the author and, in fact, prepared by a process he
perfected. Originally planned as a fifteen volume series arranged
geographically, only thirteen volumes of the work were completed before
Hough’s death. The fourteenth and final volume was completed by his
daughter, Marjorie Hough, using specimens and notes prepared by her
father before his death, in 1924.

Because of the long period of
time over which the set was produced, and because many buyers purchased
volumes for one or two regions, very few complete sets were ever
assembled. This work represents Hough’s greatest achievement. The
range of trees included makes it an invaluable resource for natural
historians, ecologists, woodworkers, antique dealers, and anyone else
interested in the natural history of American trees.

2. Edinburgh Encyclopedia. Brewster, David. The Edinburgh Encyclopedia, Conducted by David Brewster, L.L.D., F.R.S.

With
the assistance of Gentlemen Eminent in Science and Literature. The
First American Edition, Corrected and improved by addition of numerous
articles relative to the Institutions of the American Continent...
Philadelphia: Published by Joseph and Edward Parker, 1832. 20 volumes
in 21, complete. Quarto, half polished calf & marbled boards, calf
labels, marbled edges. Engraved title, portraits, maps, plates. Very
Good; some foxing. A previous owner of this set took apart the two
volumes of plates, divided them in such a way as to be more handy and to
more or less coincide with each third of the text. He then had Bayntun
rebind the two volumes into three, replicating the original half calf
and marbled boards. $5,000.00

Edited
by the scientist Sir David Brewster (1781-1868), the project was begun
in 1808 and was originally intended to be published in 12 volumes. The
text was eventually extended to 18 volumes (plus the plates) and was not
completed until 1830. Including over one hundred and fifty
contributors this was a major bibliographic undertaking. Brewster
blamed some of the delay in publication on 'the indolence, the ill
health, and the deaths of Contributors'.

Arranged alphabetically
and wide ranging in subject the work is illustrated with over 500 copper
plates. The Encyclopedia is notable for its many scientific articles by
leading authors of the day. Brewster wrote many of the articles
himself; other notable contributors include: Charles Babbage (1791-1871)
on Notation and Porism; Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) on Nelson, Mungo
Park and William Pitt; Robert Grant (1793-1874) on Zoophytes and
Zoophytology; William Leach (1791-1836) contributed an article on
Entomology which included the first bibliography on the topic; Robert
Stevenson (1772-1850) on the Bell Rock Light House, Edystone Rock, Light
Houses, Railway and Roads; Thomas Telford (1757 – 1834) on
Architecture, Bridge, Civil Architecture and Inland Navigation; James

vii, [1 blank], 475 pp. The lecture on the United States Constitution
is not previously published. "The great excellence of this constitution
consists in the simplicity of its object, which is the security of each
individual in the enjoyment of his natural rights, without aiming at
much positive advantage; by which means every person, knowing that he
will be effectually protected from violence and injustice, both against
the evil-minded of his fellow citizens, and the enemies of his nation,
will be at full liberty to employ all his faculties for his own
advantage; and this he will better understand, and provide for, than the
state could do for him." Although these lectures focus on history,
Priestley is better known for his scientific endeavors. He is credited
with numerous discoveries, including the first to isolate oxygen, and is
known for the discovery of nine other gases, including carbon monoxide,
nitric oxide, nitrous oxide, and ammonia. He is also credited with the
invention of carbonated water and the rubber eraser. During Benjamin
Franklin's visit to England, he met Priestley, the two became life-long
friends, and later co-founded the American Philosophical Society.
Priestley strongly believed in the free and open exchange of ideas. His
support for toleration and equal rights for religious dissenters led
him to help found Unitarianism in England (and later in America). These
ideas, coupled with his outspoken support of the American and French
Revolutions, eventually forced him to flee England - after a mob burned
his home and church - to the backcountry of Pennsylvania, where he spent
the last ten years of his life. The volumes have some shelf wear,
foxing, original owner's signature. $450.00

Wish you Merry Christmas and - and here's to her'!" Signed by the author and dated December 1897." Also inserted is a three-page autograph letter from the author, on his letterhead, dated "Dec 12, 1897," addressed to "My dear Miss Laughlin." Clara E. Laughlin (1873-1941) was the author of more than 35 books, headed a Travel Service with offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Paris, and published a monthly magazine with a circulation of more than 80,000. In this case, Grant (a popular novelist of his day) writes to the young Laughlin with "the congratulations of a philosopher on your entertaining article the 'Martyrdom of Fame' in the current Scribner. I have read it with much enjoyment & have heard others praise it." Later in the note he admonishes himself for not asking Laughlin to lunch when she was in Boston, thinking that perhaps she "preferred to wish lunch alone." He continues, "There is certainly nothing more attractive in modern civilization than the independent modern woman of the finest type - She is so unconscious of her own attraction, and so suggestive of the escape of her sex from the thrall of fiddle faddle.
11. Barrows, Mary Eleanor. John Henry Barrows.

Chicago: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1904. 1st edition. Presentation copy, inscribed: "To Clara E. Laughlin, to whom / the 'Light of Asia's' heart went out / from the first time he met her / till the end of his life; with / the admiring love of // Mary Eleanor Barrows / Christmas, 1904." Clara E. Laughlin (1873-1941) was the author of more than 35 books, headed a Travel Service with offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Paris, and published a monthly magazine with a circulation of more than 80,000. The subject of the biography, John Henry Barrows, was the senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Chicago, at the time of the Exposition of 1893. Because of his proximity to the organizers of the Fair, he was asked to organize and chair a concurrent religious event. In preparation for what became known as the World Parliament of Religions, Barrows and his committee sent out some ten thousand personal letters (not to mention forty thousand documents) to the far corners of the world. "We affectionately invite the representatives of all faiths," the letter said, "to aid us in presenting to the world, at the Exposition of 1893, the religious harmonies and unities of humanity, and also in showing forth the moral and spiritual agencies which are the root of human progress." Beginning September 11th, 1893, and for the following seventeen days, more than 4,000 representatives of the world's religions - Protestantism, Hinduism, Jainism, Islam, Judaism, Catholicism, Greek and Russian Orthodoxy, Confucianism, Taoism, Shintoism, Ethical Culture, and others - met to "bring forth the truths the various religions teach in common," and to "promote the brotherhood among religious men of diverse faith." The Parliament was a landmark event bringing, for the first time in history, so diverse an audience. So, naturally it's became a destination, a place people wanted to visit. When people come to visit, they're probably going to want some help knowing what to see and do. In the earliest days, it was all word-of-mouth. Then came printing and the guide book was born. Mike discusses things you should know about early Florida guide books in this episode of Rare Book Moment.

Visit http://www.oldfloridabookstore.com
Lighthouse Books, ABAAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07160622913496321601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970013107453358235.post-53809150797679611862021-01-17T16:35:00.003-05:002021-01-17T16:35:34.560-05:00Rare Book Moment 10: What's ephemera worth and what do you need to know?

We're having terrific time revisiting these episodes of Rare Book Moment that we created years ago in the old store in St. Petersburg. This particular one is about ephemera, those little bits of paper that somehow have survived down through the years. We like them because they give us glimpse back in time to how life was long ago.
In this one, we're showing a ladies dance card that would have been used in the late 1800s, an advetising item from about the same time showcasing a printer's handiwork, a political brochure advertising some political pamphlets, and a real estate brochure that happens to be advertising a development in our area in the 1950s.
We hope you are enjoying this series and, if so, let us know in the comments below. Also know that we're working on a new series, Rare Book Moment 2.0, what will be set in our new location in Dade City, Florida, about an hour or so north of our old store in St. Petersburg.
Visit http://www.oldfloridabookstore.com
Lighthouse Books, ABAAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07160622913496321601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970013107453358235.post-65875834792234369082021-01-11T11:30:00.003-05:002021-01-11T11:54:46.823-05:00Rare Book Moment 9: Collecting color printing – what you need to know

People come in the store sometimes and ask "what should I collect?" The short answer, of course, is collect what you like, what gives you pleasure. In today's very visual world, some people are attracted to the beautiful realm of color printing.

For the first 400 years or so, there was no color printing. When it first began, everything was hand-colored, a painstaking process. In the 1830s, we begin to see stone lithographs, and later, printing from metal plate, which greatly increased the volume a printer could produce.

There are many examples of color printing, and Mike discusses some of them in this episode of Rare Book Moment. Here's what you should know
Welcome back Hope you had a great Christmas. Here we are between Christmas and New Year's Day, and we thought we'd resume our revisits to our Rare Book Moment series we first started producing nine years ago. This particular one was created eight years ago.

You know, some one once asked why we call this Rare Book Moment because it really isn't just a moment. In a sense, that's true. However, in a larger sense, we're really only here for a moment, aren't we? And we're custodians for some wonderful tomes that span the centuries. So, if you think of it that way, the name Rare Book Moment is perfectly appropriate.

This time (and next) were probably among our most popular entries ever. People want to know if their book is valuable. In this episode, Mike offers a way to think about that question. Next time we'll be talking about how to build a great collection. We hope you can join us then, too.

Visit http://www.oldfloridabookstore.com
T. In this case, we're taking a look, through several beautiful little volumes, at American women during the Victorian Era. The books shown in this short episode of Rare Book Moment are snapshots that give us a glimpse into what life might have been like for educated women of some means. Please watch the video, and if you have questions, please leave them below.

Visit http://www.oldfloridabookstore.com
Lighthouse Books, ABAAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07160622913496321601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970013107453358235.post-87742038247982129922020-11-24T08:36:00.006-05:002020-12-07T09:20:02.558-05:00Rare Book Moment 3: Fine Bindngs

It's probably not surprising that we enjoy revisiting the early videos of our Rare Book Moment series. After all, they're all about old books, right?

So this is the third in our series that we started nine years ago.

Of course, this video was made in our old store in St. Petersburg. Last time we checked, that old blue bungalow was still there. Across the street these days a new apartment complex has risen from the ground. And Lighthouse Books, ABAA? We're happy in our new home in Dade City, which is about an hour drive north from St. Petersburg.

We've had people wonder if we had moved to Miami. (We're guessing they were linking Dade County and Dade City.) No, we're in a sweet little town with a lot of history. In fact, Dade City is named for Brevet Major Francis L. Dade, the cavalry officer who led two companies of U.S. Army soldiers in a battle during the Second Seminole War. It became known as the Dade Massacre. A total of 108 soldiers were killed as a result of that battle in December 1835, including Major Dade.

But this post isn't about the Seminole Wars. We may visit that in another post. Meantime, we're discussing beautiful workmanship on fine bindings. We hope you enjoy this journey back to the early years of Rare Book Moment and we hope you'll look for more episodes soon.

Please leave comments below or send us an email at lighthousebooksabaa@gmail.com and let us know you're enjoying the series or any questions you'd like answered. This particular episode has been particularly popular. It explores some of the criteria used to determine an antiquarian book's worth. We thought it would be instructive for first-time collectors who are trying to figure out what book they've come across might be worth. As always, we invite you to let us know if you like the series. Tell us if you enjoy it.

Nine years ago, we began a video series called Rare Book Moment. It was meant to provide some insight into the world of antiquarian book collecting. Over the years, we've been told that viewers found the series useful and informative. We're grateful for the loyal following.

Now we're opening up our archives and revisiting the series, one week at a time. Please let us know if you find these useful and if you have any questions.

We're talking old books here, so not much has changed. The books, like the rest of us, have gotten a little older but the principles of collecting have remained much the same. For that reason, we think this series can still be useful to book collectors.

Keen-eyed observers will realize this series is a a place that doesn't look at all like our location in Dade City, Florida, just up the road north from Tampa. That's because when we began this series we were located in a little blue bungalow (1920s vintage) located in the Methodist Town neighborhood of St. Petersburg. It was on First Avenue North, and it was our home for about four decades.

Now we're located on Fifth Street in Dade City, a charming little town about an hour drive from where we were in St. Petersburg. We love it here, and we encourage our St. Petrsburg friends to take a little roadtrip and visit us in Dade City, which, if you're familiar with Florida history, you'll know is named for Major Francis Dade, a U.S. Army officer who unknowingly led his troops into a massacre during the Second Seminole War.

You can see some of the new store in videos we have started posting on Facebook and YouTube.
In the meantime, get ready to go back with us to the first insallments of Rare Book Moment.

We have a plethora of finely written mysteries in excellent condition and we just wanted to share.

That’s why we’re having our Murder & Mystery Sale at such terrific prices (just $4 for most copies; a little more for some signed copies that would be first-rate additions to any crime fiction fan’s collection.)

You can see from the video just what an excellent collection we have. Most are Florida-based writers (we like that), though not all have Florida settings for what they write. No matter. They’re still fun reads. Here's a partial list: Randy Wayne White, Patricia Cornwell, John Sandford, Michael Connelly, Robert B. Parker, James Patterson, Stuart Woods, J.D. Robb, Carl Hiaasen, Jack Higgins, Sue Grafton, James W. Hall, Lee Child.

So come in soon and find out whodunit.
Visit http://www.oldfloridabookstore.com
Lighthouse Books, ABAAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07160622913496321601noreply@blogger.com0Dade City, FL, USA28.3647248 -82.19591780000001828.3088298 -82.276598800000016 28.4206198 -82.115236800000019tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970013107453358235.post-46800468113134968372020-01-22T19:52:00.000-05:002020-01-22T21:56:22.624-05:00Thank you to everyone who came out to our Open House at our new home in Dade City

We had a grand time on Saturday, January 18, as we celebrated moving into our new shop in Dade City. It was a beautiful day and we're so thankful for all our friends who turned out for the event. Thank you especially to the Dade City Chamber of Commerce for arranging a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the occasion. It was quite the festive event.

In the slideshow above, you can get a glimpse of some of what was going on that day. We're grateful for the treasure hunters, the folks who come in looking for a hidden treasure among the stacks – and finding them. You'll see photos of some of them here. It was gratifying to see so many old friends, some of whom we hadn't seen for quite awhile, and so many new friends who came and celebrated with us. In the slideshow below, you'll find a lot of hugging going on. We admit it. We're huggers, and we were just so pleased to see so many of our friends at our Open House.

We're so happy in our new roomy shop. Countless visitors remarked on how open it is compared with our cramped little blue house we were in for so many decades in St. Petersburg. To be sure, we enjoyed our time in St. Petersburg, and we're grateful that so many of our friends from St. Petersburg and Tampa have made the short journey north to our new little burg.

One thing they've discovered is that aside from the roominess of our new location, things are pretty much the same when it comes to what we have in the store. If anything, we can just see more of what we've always had. The same subject areas that our friends have come to know and love over the years are still here. We have a fine Florida section, as you might expect. We have lots of Americana from all over the country. Aviation enthusiasts know we have an extensive aviation collection. Natural history abounds. Our children's section has a lot of very special material. Of course, there's literature, and there's maps and there's military. Civil war? You bet. And so much more.

So longtime fans of Lighthouse Books need not worry that their favorite subjects have been overlooked in our move to new facilities. We still have what we've always had –– an extensive collection of used and collectible books certain to please any book lover. Plus maps, prints, photographs, and ephemera.

So, if you came out for our Open House, thank you for doing so. If you haven't had a chance yet to visit our new location, please do. We'd love to see you. Before you make the trip, though, be aware that our hours have changed. We're open Wednesday through Sunday, Closed Monday and Tuesday. Most days we're open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Sundays it's noon to 4 p.m. If you haven't discovered it before, Dade City is a delightful town, with interesting shops and restaurants. It is a place worthy of your time to explore it. See you soon.

So, here we are all settled (well, as much as we ever are) in our new home in Dade City. It's really a beautiful place and we're proud to be here and proud to be neighbors in this charming little town. We're at the far reaches of the Tampa Bay area but really not that far from our old home on First Avenue N in St. Petersburg. It's a quick drive up I-75 (or U.S. 301, if you'd prefer.)

If you're never ventured up here from the busy streets of St. Petersburg or Tampa, we really recommend that you do so, not just to see us (though that would be wonderful, of course) but also to visit the antiques shops and the delightful restaurants in town. Make it an outing!

Of course, we know you'll have plenty of fun browsing our shelves in our new place and discovering treasures you'll just want to take home with you. And you can do it all in, as Heminway put it, a clean, well lighted place. (Of course, he was talking about a cafe and we're not a cafe but we'd venture to say you can find some bibliophilic morsels on our shelfs, though we frown on eating the books.)
This is our new home in Dade City, which is about an hour away from our old location in St. Petersburg. It's the old Hodges Funeral Home, a delightful and cozy place. We're certain we're going to like it here, and we hope you will, too. We'll have much more to say about our new home later on but we just wanted you to know that we're here and we're getting settled.
Visit http://www.oldfloridabookstore.com
Lighthouse Books, ABAAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07160622913496321601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1970013107453358235.post-25694209286092032422019-09-09T21:30:00.001-04:002019-09-09T21:34:55.967-04:00Rare Book Moment: What you need to know about registration for four-color printingNo. 28: Mike's back with some tips about vintage four-color printing and what to look for when evaluating books with full color illustrations or photographs.
